Please keep donating any early learning toys your child has finished playing with. We are starting to get a good collection of toys in, but are looking for lots more! If you would be interested in helping us sort out the toys, then please let a member of staff in the centre know.

A child’s Perspective

During the last few weeks the staff at Ireland Wood Children’s Centre have started to find out what the children in the 3- 4 room know about sustainable development.

To gain the child’s views practitioners have worked one to one with the children to talk about the OMEP’s logo on sustainable development. Please check out our notice board on sustainable development to see their thoughts. You will be amazed at how much young children understand!

Playschemes go wild in the woods at Skelton Grange

The Squirrels of Ireland Wood have been spotted at Skelton Grange Environment Centre, taking part in an exciting day of discovery in the Centre’s wildlife gardens! The Squirrels, a playscheme group based in Ireland Wood, got involved in a range of activities from pond-dipping to shelter-building, all designed to give them hands-on experience of how exciting the natural world can be.

Skelton Grange has been offering Wild in the Woods adventure days for summer playscheme groups from all over Leeds during the school holidays. A wide range of groups have visited, including those that work with disadvantaged children, thanks to funding from the Andy Fanshawe Memorial Trust.

“It’s been fantastic to have so many children enjoying our Centre and wild space this summer”, said Project Officer Amy Wright. “All our activities are hands-on and multi-sensory, so children with a wide range of abilities have been able to have lots of fun in the outdoors!”

Skelton Grange Environment Centre is an innovative environmental education project in South Leeds, which is a partnership between BTCV and National Grid with support from Leeds City Council. It offers a range of fun, hands-on environmental education activities for schoolchildren and youth groups which aim to encourage an interest in the natural world.

Early Education for Sustainable Development.

During the last few months the Children’s Centre has been working closely with Kimberly Smith, who is currently studying at Leeds Metropolitan University. Over the next few months, the children’s centre, will be working in partnership with Kimberly to set up and run a project on Sustainable Education for the Early Years.

Being sustainable involves development, ‘meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.” Brundtland (1987). It is about the development of the economy, society and the environment to make it more sustainable.

Sustainability for the early years is one of the key aims that the World Organisation for Early Childhood Education wishes to address over the next few years. Therefore we hope to work with Kimberly on innovative projects to raise the children’s knowledge and experience on sustainability, and also raise our own and yours.

Recycling Early Learning Toys.

Over the next few weeks we would love your help in a project we wish to start running. As a centre we have decided that one way we can start being sustainable is by collecting things others would usually throw away. This being early learning toys!

We have decided to open up the Children’s Centre as a hub for collecting any early learning toys that children have finished playing with. We will then pass these toys onto children who are in less advantaged pre-schools around the world.

As part of the process of collecting toys we will be increasing children and adults knowledge and skills in issues of recycling, biodegradable products and appreciating and valuing what we have. Through the project we are helping the environment, making links both internationally and with the local community. We are also cutting down on costs to recycle and produce new toys.

Throughout the project we would like to hear of any views or suggestions you may have? Are you particularly motivated by the issue? Could you offer any of your time to volunteer in sorting out toys? If so please let us know.
